Suicide Prevention:

 

A Suicide Prevention Hotline, The Trevor Helpline is the only nationwide, around-the-clock crisis and suicide prevention helpline for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth.  1- 866 - 4 - U - Trevor

Your call is routed to a trained crisis call worker in your area who will be able to provide you with crisis counseling and information and referrals to local resources. If a crisis call worker is not available at the center closest to you, then your call will be routed to a crisis call worker at the next nearest center.

Both 1-800-SUICIDE and 1-800-273-TALK are now being funded by The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

 

Medical:

 

Medical expenses add up quickly.  Several stores are offering discount prices on many generic medication.  At present, Wal-Mart and Target do not charge any membership fees to be eligible for the discounts.  For more info about a store's program, ask the pharmacy.  For a list of which medications are being offered at discount prices, check out:

Domestic Violence:

 

The Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Inc (CCADV) is a membership organization whose purpose is to work together to end domestic violence by advocating for victims and changing the social conditions, beliefs, and social actions that perpetuate abuse against victims of domestic violence.

 

National Coalition Against Domestic Violence If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, this website has some good tips about things like safety plans, and identity protection, information about the laws, and helpful resources.

Connecticut Association of Centers for Independent Living  To help you find an independent living center near you, or to find out which ILC covers your area of Connecticut.  DNEC is an ILC and we cover most of Eastern Connecticut.  Click here for specific towns we serve.

 

State Independent Living Council

 

National Council on Independent Living “NCIL advances independent living and the rights of people with disabilities through consumer-driven advocacy.  NCIL envisions a world in which people with disabilities are valued equally and participate fully.”

 

The National Association of Rights Protection and Advocacy  NARPA is an organization dedicated to protecting an individual’s right to make choices regarding their psychiatric “care” and the right to be free from coercion in making those choices.

 

The Disability Advocacy Collaborative -- Enhancing the effectiveness of disability activism in Connecticut by organizing and empowering individuals, families, groups, and organizations.  They have a fabulous calendar which is very up to date.

The Connecticut Legal Rights Project is a non-profit organization engaged in advocating for the rights of individuals with mental health diagnoses.

 

Advocacy Unlimited teaches individuals with mental illness to be advocates for themselves; including systems advocacy and legislative advocacy.

 

The Office of Protection and Advocacy for Persons with Disabilities (better known as OPA or simply "P&A") is an independent State agency created to safeguard and advance the civil and human rights of people with disabilities in Connecticut.

 

 

Other Organizations, agencies, information:

 

National Council on Disability is an independent federal agency composed of members appointed by the President of the United States, by and with the advice and consent of the U.S. Senate. NCD provides advice to the President, Congress, and executive branch agencies to promote policies, programs, practices, and procedures that guarantee equal opportunity for all individuals with disabilities, regardless of the nature or severity of the disability and to empower individuals with disabilities to achieve economic self-sufficiency, independent living, and inclusion and integration into all aspects of society.

 

Brain Injury Association of Connecticut  BIAC’s website has numerous resources for individuals who have experienced any type of brain injury.  They hold support group meetings all around the state in many different locations and at many different times.  To find one near you can click here.

 

Area Agency on Aging This site provides information and services to the aging population as well as to family members and those who care for them.

Allergy and Asthma Network; Mothers of Asthmatics

Travelers-with-wheels.com has accessible group or individual tours specifically designed for individuals who use wheelchairs or who have difficulty walking.
