DNEC is Seeking Computer Donations

Computers have an enormous potential to enrich the lives and increase independence for people with disabilities.  The internet is a virtual world filled with stores, libraries, post offices, newspapers, etc. 

For one consumer with a Traumatic Brain Injury, the computer helps him to keep track of daily tasks and appointments, something he cannot do for himself.  When he boots up his computer, the Outlook calendar is the first thing to come up, telling him what he needs to do that day. 

For another, with speech difficulties, email is a much easier way to communicate.  She has Dyskinetic dysarthria and cognitive impairments.  She struggles to find words and her speech is slurred.   With email, she can take as long as needed to find the words she is seeking, and she can delete and retype as often as needed.  The result is that her communications are clear and she doesn't feel the frustration of attempting to communicate verbally.

A computer is a lifeline for a consumer with an anxiety disorder such as Agoraphobia.  He is able to go grocery shopping without leaving the house through services like Peapod.com.  With the internet, he can shop for anything he needs, pay bills, and visit with friends, all online without having to leave the house.

Another consumer, a high school student, has difficulty writing or even typing.  With a computer, and voice recognition software, she can complete her assignments on her own.

Unfortunately many people with disabilities cannot afford a computer.  And although there are computers for public use in libraries, this is not an answer for people who need specialized programs or who are unable to get out on their own.
